PART 1 – Introduction

Q. Let’s talk about what you do. Do you work or are you a student?
A.Thank you for the question. Well, I am a regional sales manager working with a multinational corporation, headquartered in the USA, and it deals with manufacturing of computer hardware. I have finished my graduation 4 years ago and a full-time employee now.

Q. What’s your job? Why did you choose that kind of work?
A.I am assigned to check everything related to the sales of products. Moreover, I have also to supervise some other employees working in different parts of the city. I picked this type of work for no specific reasons. I was seeking a job after completing my graduation and got this one in my luck. However, I must inform you that I love my job and I feel lucky to have this job. This job perfectly suits my academic background, skill set and expectation.

Q. How long have you been doing it?
A.I have been working in this profession for past four years. I joined this company just after I finished my graduation and have never changed my job till now.

Q. What is a typical day like at your work?
A.The typical day begins with the account inventory management. Then I set the sales target for the day and distribute that to the staff working with me. Sometimes, I need to visit the showrooms to know about the real sales scenarios and match them with the statistics I am provided with. Besides, I also need to pay attention to complaints and queries from the clients and customers as well. Setting up or revision of the sales strategy is another usual task that I do every day. Besides, I read newspapers, check my emails and drink around 3-4 cups of coffee per day. Overall, I enjoy my work schedule.

Q. Are there things you don’t like about it? What are they?  
A.Yes, there are certain things that I cannot cope up with, but these are minors. Reaching the sales target every month is a hefty task for me and for the other employees as well. I also need to work on the weekends sometimes which is frustrating for an employee like me.

Part 3 – Two-way Discussion:

Q. How do different cultures celebrate events?
Answer: People of various cultures celebrate their respective festivals and occasions based on their tradition, religion and custom. Marking the events, they take necessary preparations and celebrate by performing rituals, making merriment and also get entertained by taking traditional foods and drinks. Sometimes, they also invite the members of other cultures to enjoy the events. these celebrations greatly vary based on the country.

Q. What is the importance of festivals?
Answer:  Ummm … actually, festivals are meant for social gathering marking different social, cultural, historical and religious events. And at the present age, the focus of the festival is wide. Festivals help to reconnect people, upheld their values or cultures. They also get relief from the ordinary activities and enjoy the rewards of hard labour. Different festivals also help to share the life and care for others. These are the most important features of the festival which have made it important.

Q. How have special occasions such as weddings changed in your culture?
Answer:  There have been significant changes in a wedding in Hong Kong with the passage of time. Earlier, when a man and woman got married, they went to a monk and followed some traditional rituals to become husband and wife. Now they need to register the marriage from a marriage registrar to be declared as husband and wife. Besides, picking the marriage date was an important matter in past which is losing its importance in the present age and it is becoming old-fashioned. Moreover, the couples are avoiding the old traditions like wearing traditional dresses, inviting lots of people or arranging a huge buffet for everyone.

Q. What history has to offer to the people? What lessons should we learn from the past?
Answer:  Thank you for the question. History is the science of past. It tells us about what people did in past and how those are different in present setting. Besides, it teaches us real-life lessons. History also helps to understand the present and how future would be. Therefore, by knowing history, people can predict the future and avoid mistakes. And it is said that history repeats itself. So, learning lessons from history may help people to comprehend complicated matters and apply the earned knowledge for their benefit. Further, by knowing past history, people can finish some incomplete works or realize the past dreams too. It helps to bring the dreams into reality and make a better future. Learning past survival strategies is another important aspect that the history offers to people.

Q. History suggests that the human civilisation is prone to get involved in war and conflicts? What is your suggestion to maintain the world peace?
Answer:  Well, it is really a crucial issue to talk about. Studying the past reveals that the human civilization was prone to war and conflicts. Even they got involved into conflicts for minor reasons. Various matters could be made liable for the conflicts and establishing supremacy was the key reason behind the situations. I think a balance of power is a must to avoid the conflicts and war. Besides, each of the nations should behave ethically to reduce conflicts and overall there should be ways of mutual negotiation between countries in such cases. Humanity is more important than borders and nations should sign treaties to avoid wars in all circumstances.

Q. Should students learn history in university level as a mandatory subject? Why/ why not?
Answer:  Umm… I do not completely agree with the statement. It would be better if history is made mandatory in their secondary and higher secondary level in line with university education. If they start knowing about history in their early stage of education, they would be able to learn the past. And in university level, the knowledge would be matured. They will start learning from an early life and in university, they would be able to comprehend what they have learnt. Moreover, making it mandatory might disrupt the education in science majors.
